Upstaging ain’t always a bad thing…

10 Dec , 2018

When I think of upstaging someone, I think of winning at their expense.  Shitting on them, making them feel inferior, something along those lines.  JR Writer, 40 cal, and Hell Rell joined forces to drop the “the Upstage” project right around the time of the new Dipset project.  Regardless of whether the timing was planned or not, it set the stage for a side by side comparison of the two projects.  I gave both a listen and sat with both projects.  Both projects gave me an incredible feeling, but I give the bigger nod of approval to the Upstage.

See, I still I miss the original Dipset era, but I miss the dip affiliate tapes more than the Dipset projects.  A-Mafia, Tom Gist and a long list of other rappers kept me tuned in for months at a time.  I used to wonder what could’ve been.  Whether Dipset could have lasted forever.  The reunions have been good and the individual members have solid catalogues.  But I always felt like JR Writer, 40cal, Hell Rell, Tom Gist, and A-Mafia could hold their own as solo artists.  They all dropped solid projects during and after the Dipset era.  This latest project proves that they can coexist with the original Dipset members without putting out an inferior product.  These dudes all spit some solid bars over dope beats.  They don’t sound bitter, they sound inspired to be great.  Inspired to prove once and for all that there are no hard feelings, just hard songs.

Check out “the Upstage” below and let us know your thoughts.
